application of filmic “qualities” is a very interesting trend. … Even though
it’s commonly recognized that visual images can be manipulated, the look of
a home movie, classroom film or “roll the clip” sports report film is still
something that communicates authenticity to audiences.

I know that in the preservation of 16mm film, many question why we worship
grain and all of those quaint qualities that accompany the gauge. The
answer is simply that we are not just preserving the information being
profered in the film, but the nature of its production.
”

- Elena Rossi-Snook, on film grain and its removal (or addition!) in archival (or “archival”!) works [AMIA-L] (the rest of her post is worth reading)

New favorite clip from 30 Rock: Stone Mountain

New favorite clip from 30 Rock: Stone Mountain

Skunk Gets Head Stuck in Peanut Butter Jar - KTLA [thanks noah!]

Skunk Gets Head Stuck in Peanut Butter Jar - KTLA [thanks noah!]

Ask MeFi: Lentils!

Ask MeFi: Lentils!:
What delicious lentil dish can I make tonight?

Tweet forwarded by @estherbester

sweetCupcake: "We do not inherit the land, we borrow it from our children" -
And yet I still do, like today, when it’s clear outside after a few days’ rain here in Los Angeles; the dampness and the scent of cigarettes outside make me miss that other city, and terribly so.

The older I get the more I realize that my experience isn’t typical. The Junior Year Abroad is a hoary cliché, and that’s another reason why it’d be easy to scoff at my wistful sighs and cliché-filled yearnings. But it can’t be denied that going abroad, and being forced by necessity to deal with the world in a truly engaged manner, causes one to experience things more vividly, so is it any surprise that the short 10 months I spent in France loom larger in my mind than my 25-odd years of living where I’ve otherwise always lived?

Maybe if I attended to each day with the same kind of attentiveness with the world around me, as familiar with it as I may be, I’d come to better appreciate that too.

MeFi: Raise Thumb. And leave it to television to enshrine correct Americanese. All those backups seemed a waste of pay.
Now my database has gone away.
Oh I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly,
There’s not half the files there used to be,
And there’s a milestone hanging over me
The system crashed so suddenly.

I pushed something wrong
What it was I could not say.

Now all my data’s gone and I long for yesterday-ay-ay-ay.

Yesterday,
Need for backup seemed so far away.
Seemed my data were all here to stay,
Now I believe in yesterday.

Anonymous”

- Slashdot Hardware Story | Server Failure Destroys Sidekick Users’ Backup Data

Ode To Joy

Ode To Joy
